What should i wear to the school dance? Please help if possible.?

I have no idea what i should wear to my junior high dance! i am in 8th grade. I am girly and preppy and i like all colors except for yellow (looks disgusting on me :p) and i was mortified at the last dance b/c everyone was wearing tanks and shorts with a cool belt, and i was wearing a dressy top with a skirt and leggings! it was like the whole school had a dress code and i didn't get the memo or something. i'm going shopping today and i don't have a limit on my budget. here are the stores that i shop at: aeropostale, american eagle, claires, hollister, dillards, and express. (i would say delias + charlotte russe too, but i don't have those stores at the mall close to me!) It would also be great if you tell me a hairstyle to do (i have a straightener and curling iron) that would look good with the outfit.
