Is Guatemala safe place?

My sister is a college student and love to travel to other countries to help out the less fortunate. This year her and a group of people are going to Guatemala. I don't really know much about Guatemala, only that its in Central America. I just want to hear from anyone who has been there to see how their experience was. Was it a safe place? Thank you
