Pike fishing issue, turtles eat bait..?

Recently i started to go fishing pike on a small nearby river, i use live fish as a bait and most of the time when i pull out the fishie is gone or half eaten.. Few times i even got turtles on my hooks.. I'm an amateur fisherman so can anyone more experienced can tell me is there any way of preventing water turtles eating my bait?
