Why is the position of privatizing marriage almost completely ignored in the debate over same- marriage?

Marriage exists for one reason only. And that has nothing to do with the relationship between two or more people. Marriage is a cash cow for the church/state. Just another way for church/state to own a pie$e of your personal life. Screw the church/state.
