What cultures did the four element bending people represent in the cartoon Avatar the Last Air Bender?

My sister and I are trying to figure out which Asian cultures the benders represent. We think that the air bender represented the Buddhist, and the water benders might have been Inuit (Eskimo), but we don't know if these are right, and what the others were.
